RYE Case Study - Devlin Martial Arts
Shane-Paul Devlin lives in Strabane, Co Tyrone where he is currently studying Level 2 Extended Diploma in I.T at the North West Regional College.
Nineteen year old Shane-Paul has developed his skills and techniques in self-defence over the past 14 years. His devotion to a robust fitness programme has served him well, as he is now a qualified National Coach at Devlin Martial Arts along with his brother Denis. Shane-Paul believes that learning martial arts has helped him build his character, taught him to be patient as well as developing his strength and courage.
“As a young boy at primary school I was quiet and felt unable to stand up for myself so I started to learn Karate at the age of 5. After years of hard work, grit and determination my brother and I decided to open a Martial Arts School in 2014 in Sion Mills Parish Hall. On average we have 25 students in each lesson, the school offers classes twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30-7:30pm.
“Everyone is welcomed from the age of 5 up, we cater for all abilities and it’s a great way to meet new friends and develop a skill that will take you through life’s trials.
“As a student studying at college I was able to attend the RYE workshops held in SWC Omagh and found them to be helpful. Both the course and RYE will benefit me greatly as an entrepreneur with my part time venture, which will hopefully expand and Devlin Martial Arts will be in a position to offer students more nights to train in a fun relaxed environment.”
To date Shane-Paul has competed in numerous competitions and achieved the following accolades: 2nd Dan Shotokan Karate; 1st Dan Kickboxing; Purple Belt Jiu JItsu; Blue Belt Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Green belt Kick-Jitsu. He has also won the Finn Valley Club Team Kumite Championship from 2003-2008 inclusive and came second in the 2004 Ulster Championships.
