The tribute in Hardinge Place to Joe Kelly

Facilitated by the PEACE III funded Building Relationships in Communities (bric) Programme, the plaque reads ‘Slán mo chara’ (Goodbye my friend) and commemorates his tireless commitment and devotion to the New Lodge and its community over the years.

The tribute has been positioned prominently in the park in Hardinge Place and will help ensure his legacy and memory lives on for years to come.

Speaking at the event, Kerry McIvor, bric Programme Manager paid tribute to Mr Kelly:

“The bric Programme is delighted, honoured and humbled to be able to place this permanent reminder to Joe and his unflagging dedication to the New Lodge area.

“He played an enormous role here and helped countless numbers of people over the years. His untimely death just twelve months ago has left a huge gap but we are delighted that his enthusiasm, drive and loyalty to the area will ensure his influence and presence will continue to be felt across the New Lodge for generations to come.

“On behalf of the bric Programme I would like to pass on our sincere thanks to his family, friends and neighbours for helping to make this tribute possible.”

“Joe was a highly respected community representative who was much loved by all he worked with over many years in the Housing Executive. He is sorely missed by all his friends and colleagues and I am delighted to be able to support such a fitting testimonial to him in this beautiful artwork and plaque. I hope his family take comfort from this lasting tribute to him and see it as a recognition for all that Joe done for his community, neighbours and colleagues”
