Department for Employment and Learning event

31 May 2011

Pathways to Success" is a draft strategy tackling the issues of those young people who are currently Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET).

The stakeholder event is designed to help inform thinking on the proposed strategy which is currently out for consultation. It is hoped that the events will support formal written responses and will also provide a chance to understand the views of others operating in the field.

The draft plans suggest the establishment of an initial broad strategic direction and set of supporting cross-Departmental actions to reduce the number of young people most at risk of remaining outside education, employment or training (NEET).

The strategy quotes an Ofsted report of March 2010 - ‘Reducing the numbers of young people not in education, employment or training: what works and why’, which says: "…a successful strategy included the use of a wide range of partners in the development of the vision and a readiness to align and pool resources so that success could be sustained and integrated into an overall strategy."

The event is also designed to facilitate this type of collaboration between organisations (public, private, community and voluntary) working with young people. It is intended to be participative with focused discussions to facilitate the completion of the consultation response form.

Timing/Venues
Event one: Thursday 2 June - Omagh, South West College, Central Hall, Omagh campus (9.45 to 12.45)

Event two: Friday 10 June - Central Belfast, Invest NI HQ (Morning)

Those attending will need to have read and be familiar with the proposed strategy. It will also be very useful to have considered the suggested response form which sets out the broad framework for discussion planned for the events. (Both documents are available from http://www.delni.gov.uk/index/consultation-zone/neetconsultation.htm).
