Housing Guide for Rural Young People launched
23 November 2010
The Housing Executive in conjunction with the Young Farmers Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) have published a housing guide for young people in rural areas.
The guide is specifically aimed at young people in rural areas and is designed to get them thinking about how and where they want to live once they leave the parental home, perhaps as they head off to college or university. It has sections on all of the relevant housing options such as building, buying, renting and renovating. There is also a useful section on energy efficiency to ensure bills are kept to a minimum.
The guide also gives sound advice on individual rights as a tenant; Social Housing and Housing Benefit.

Northern Ireland Housing Executive Chair Brian Rowntree explains: “It’s never too early for young people to think about their housing choices and working with the Young Farmers Clubs of Ulster provides an ideal way for the Housing Executive to get that message across. Moving away from home for the first time can be a daunting experience. We hope this guide will be useful, by prompting young people to ask the right questions of landlords and agents to make sure their first move is the right move”.
YFCU President Thoburn McCaughey welcomed the guide: “We are delighted to be collaborating with the Housing Executive on this project. The magazine format of the guide is great for our members and very accessible. A quiz and games book has also been included with the guide and we hope that this can be used at Club Meetings to create some lively discussion and debate.”
